About the Book

What’s it like to leave a corporate career and pursue a dream in fashion design? How do you break into the insular world of high fashion? How does a designer face her struggles when navigating the intimidating New York fashion scene?

Alterations in Life - Finding My Way in Fashion

Author Fotini Copeland learned the answers to these questions one stitch and scrap at a time. Alterations in Life is the inspiring memoir of a designer who broke into the fashion industry, experienced its highs and lows, and grew into a leader best suited to serve her niche: women who are aspiring and influential, like her.

Few memoirs show what it’s really like to make success in the most glamorous industry of them all. Fotini’s behind-the-folding-screen look at running a design house takes readers from the old-world ateliers of northern Italy to New York, today’s epicenter of luxury fashion design.

- AMY POEHLER

“Positive, thoughtful and loaded with style—this is how I’d describe Fotini as a person and it’s exactly why people are naturally drawn to her. She exists from a place of authenticity in everything she does while managing to look effortlessly fabulous in every situation. Alterations in Life is a treat and an inspiration!”

- ZOE WEISBERG COADY

founder and CEO, Brandstyle Communications

“As a luxury retailer for thirty-plus years, I have worked with many talented creative directors and designers throughout my career. As I reflect back, Fotini has always been an influencer and champion for women through fashion. Her exquisite designs and feminine aesthetic were brought to life in Houston with her passion for personal branding. She has an innate ability to connect with the customer with her very real and relevant approach to fashion. Fotini is smart, talented, inspiring, and a lovely friend.”

- JULIE ROBERTS

owner of Elizabeth Anthony Boutique in Houston, Texas

“Working with Fotini was a joy due simply to her honesty and humbleness, yet at the same time mixed with her ambition and drive to get to where she wanted to go. I remember, of course, the fears and concerns—especially in the beginning—which illustrate her humbleness but also her strength, drive, and ambition not to give up. She wanted something that, at the time, seemed so far away, but Fotini was always honest about what she did and didn’t want, and she is strong in a world that—whether we see it or not—is often controlled by men.”

- GABRIO CANTINI

president, Cantini International

“From the moment I slip into a FOTINI dress, I feel empowered and effortlessly chic, reminding me to stride into the room standing tall and feeling confident as I feel my best self. I am a believer!”

- DANA BANNER LANDOW

attorney, mother, philanthropist
