Well, where does one begin when we discuss fashion these days?
Fashion shows and the fashion world has had a mystic aura about it over the years from glamour and beauty witnessed as designers often opt in making bold statements about their vision. They fuel their work by what inspires them and use their platform to address global issues while forming into an artistic masterpiece. Through these anticipated and coveted productions, others will follow their lead.
Fast-forward to today’s landscape – a sense of reality and pragmatism has disrupted the industry’s previous affairs. Pivots have been made as virtual shows are introduced and models strut down the runway sporting face masks… and not for effect, rather the fact that we are living in a global pandemic.
This past year will mark as one of the most influential years of our lives. From the depths of quarantine, several lockdowns and lack of human connection it is easy to fall into the “doom and gloom” cycle. A little levity through fashion and simple indulgence is needed, a reminder that we can still enjoy the artistry that fashion brings while keeping it real.
When investing in trends I have always brought forward the red flags that come with spending our hard-earned money on pieces that simply come and go. Simultaneously, I believe that your investment pieces should be ones that bring you joy, longevity and wearability. So, with that in mind here are some trends that will do that just that.
Knits
They have always been a must-have in one’s wardrobe, but I believe what we learned during this past year is that they have served us in comfort and style. From working at home to hopefully enjoying a cocktail/mocktail in a socially distanced outdoor space sometime soon. The weight of a knit can serve as an all-season staple and great for layering.
Playfulness and Decadence
A touch of whimsy is necessary at the moment, and I believe we can all relate to this! Perhaps, a bold piece with feathers or a Studio 54 inspired look with silvery or gold lame textures, or even…dare I say it, sequins and florets. This is where a carefully selected piece should be able to work with all your staples (if done right!) and one that you may want to at some point bring out as vintage in years to come.
Oversized Boyfriend Jackets
I am cautiously pointing out that oversized doesn’t mean the piece should swallow your silhouette up! It should never be sloppy.
Fashion is like a rotation of the universe, trends and styles always come back around whether it be in a few seasons or decades after. This 80’s inspired look has made its way back to the runways this season. A great way to work with this style is to pair with straight-leg pant, denim, a pencil skirt or better yet as we approach the warmer weather shorts! For a little added chic-ness, try belting it.
Florals
Always a great choice – it was wonderful to see this print back on the runway. I personally do not believe in sticking to florals for the Spring/Summer season(s) as they serve us well all year-round in every season. There is always a little feel of escapism in florals and we truly need that these days. A glimpse of a Mediterranean vacation or walking on a beautiful beach…one can dream!
Maxi Dresses
Romantic, comfortable and elegant! The flowy maxi is also taking stage as a trend for 2021, but this too is a staple that can be dressed up or down and layered with a knit, moto-jacket or on is own.
Colours
An easy way to showcase trend into your wardrobe is through colour. This season I’m ecstatic because I’m seeing many of my favourites. Monocromatic, sorbet pastels, all shades of pink and bold statements in yellow, blue and orange and of course a favourite and classic white!!!
We can dream of cocktails in the Riviera or some exotic island get-a-way even though we are still facing the reality of staying put! With some of these trends our approach to fashion and where to invest allows us to dress-up, be playful and remain current and chic.
We will return to our lives pre-pandemic whatever that may look like and while we all have a responsibility to remain socially conscience of protocols we can still have some fun with our fashion!
