At last, we are officially in my favourite season….summer!
As we embrace and enjoy the beautiful days ahead, we can now comfortably spend more time outdoors, whether it be in our backyard or on our balcony. However you choose to spend your time outdoors, the key points to keep in mind are comfort and staying cool – with that said, a sense of fashion is also important, whatever your style may be.
The ideal garment that will keep you cool and stylish on those sweltering and humid days is the Kaftan. Dating back to 600 B.C. in Persia, the Kaftan was worn by royals and dignitaries who sported these embellished garments as their day to day attire. The voluminous shaped garments were handmade in an array of fabrics, such as luminous silks and different kinds of cotton, which were printed and/or embroidered. The exquisite details held and continue to hold a high sense of elegance while remaining chic, which comes as no surprise as to why this garment has been a staple in wardrobes for centuries.
For some, the silhouette seemed to be unappealing and somewhat old-fashioned with its unflattering, non-fitted shape and excessive amounts of fabric. That said, as of late, the Kaftan has been adapted by couture houses such as Christian Dior and others who have recently taken on a Bohemian aesthetic that could be translated as more current and on-trend. Today, the silhouette is a fashion choice for many – with its non-constricting shape and often plunging neckline, low back, or high slit styles. This sophisticated yet feminine look is tapered, just enough, to show off the right amount of ‘sexy’ flare, making it a wardrobe staple for glamorous women globally.
A few of my favourite designers have recreated this iconic garment in a beautiful and modern way such as Gucci, Pucci, Rachel Zoe, Oscar De La Renta, and Roberto Cavalli. Here are a few stunning options of this historic and yet modern version of the Kaftan.
