Five Coat Options To Complete Your Look
Feeling the fashion winter blues? If the answer is yes, then it is time to rethink your outerwear wardrobe. Chin up and straighten your chic beret!
Any woman with an interest in fashion loves a well-stocked outerwear collection. We are lucky to have four seasons, in particular autumn and winter that allow us to dazzle in the cooler temperatures. Here are my favorite winter toppers and coats that will complement your look and your style.
The Belted Coat
Classic. Beautiful. Universally flattering. This go-to coat is the choice of many fashion savvy dressers. Be sure to include this piece in your coat edit. Why? It’s perfect for work (hides the bulkiness that a suit can create under a coat), date night (stay warm in a dress, yes please) and any other occasion you want to look put-together. It also works with many body types: accentuating an hourglass shape, or defining a waist. Consider an embellished/textured collar as a focal point if you want to keep the attention away from the silhouette. If you can, invest in a wool belted coat, and choose a neutral shade like camel, black or midnight blue. It looks expensive and timeless.
The “leather” category (whether you opt for real or faux) is wide with style. You can go for a Paris edit look with a lined moto jacket, #ladyboss with a wrap coat/trench, trend-focused with quilted bomber, or even an uber-feminine fitted jacket. But one theme weaves these all together – elevated casual style. It’s great with jeans, winter leggings, stylish boots, and your favorite bag.
Fashion editors have dubbed these “teddy bear” coats as the trend of the season! Whether you choose an animal print or go for color, this is a definite statement piece and you will get attention. That said, this fuzzy coat can also be divisive – it’s not a look that those outside of the fashion realm will always appreciate. So, if you work in a conservative environment, save this for evenings and weekends when you spend time with those who love you and your style. And if you’re lucky enough to have a creative or fashion career, it just might be work-appropriate. But one thing you need to pull off this faux fur look: lots of confidence and swag.
Protect yourself from the elements and protect your style with this fitted jacket that always looks on-trend. I love a tailored coat (double or single breasted, up to you). This works well with ankle booties, skinny jeans and your favorite tee. But I also love it with a sweater set, dress pants and loafers, or even a cocktail dress and sparkly heels. The key to successfully pulling off this coat is all in the fit. Check the shoulders, the waist, buttons and length for draping or pulling. If you find one that you love but it’s not quite right, consider getting it tailored.
Some days the weather calls for function over fashion. But thankfully you can still look good in down – or vegan-friendly polyester fill, if you desire. Puffer coats, thankfully, have come a long way and are much more fashionable than you might think. These are great for hiking, snow shoveling, long commutes to work or any other situations where you’ll have to be outside for longer than you’d like. Just channel your favorite celeb at Sundance. With a swipe of your favorite lipstick, you’ll be ready to tackle the cold.
