A Look Into My Day And How I Tackle It - Creating A Routine For Success

What is your daily routine? Isn’t that a loaded question? 

My day – like yours, is layered, a juggling act, more often than not, complicated and hopefully filled with more positive experiences.  While not every day is the same, I do try to stick with a schedule that sets me up for success. But the world of fashion moves fast and so does my daily routine. You’ll see tasks (yes, I call them tasks because that ensures I do them) I view them like attainable goals. But I also keep it real and somewhat flexible, too. I can’t dig my heels in too deep, as my business requires me to adapt to a wide range of situations and stressors.  Here are some things that work for me.

6:30 to 7:45 a.m.

I typically get up between these times. I used to look at my phone in the dark before getting out of bed. But now I don’t even turn it on until much later. Someone who calls and goes straight to voicemail may think I’m sleeping, and that’s okay. I don’t want any unnecessary noise to start my day – I just need adorable puppy kisses from my Yorkie Bronx to get moving. And those who need to get in touch with me know how to do so – I am never unreachable.

To do the same, turn your phone off before you go to sleep. And place your phone somewhere that would require for you to get up from bed to view or answer messages – this way it becomes an extra effort – don’t leave it on your nightstand.

Once I’m up and alert, I put on my workout clothes. No make-up. Hair pulled back. No jewelry. I cannot have anything around or on my face.

I never workout on an empty stomach. I drink eight ounces of room temperature water a with slice of lemon and a few dashes of cayenne pepper along with a light breakfast, like a soft-boiled egg with a rusk or yogurt and low in sugar granola, fresh berries (a daily must) sprinkled with cinnamon and pomegranate seeds.

At breakfast, I’ll read the paper. Like a real, hand-held, ink-on-my fingers paper. Educating oneself around world issues is essential, although at times we want to run away from them.  If we don’t learn and understand what is happening around us how can we intelligently form an opinion? I do read the BOF (Business of Fashion) online, and I’ll quickly review emails/texts to see if I need to put any fires out.

7:45 a.m.

Nothing makes me feel better than being at the gym. It’s about getting those endorphins going. Sure, there are days when I really don’t want to be there, but I always end up happy that I went.  Discipline and focus are key, but allow yourself the occasional break (just don’t make it a habit).

My workout involves some form of cardio, whether it’s the elliptical, treadmill, hiking/walks with a mix of good elevation and hills. I would hike daily if I could. Other days anything from Pilates to weight training.

9:00 a.m.

I am now ready to start the rest of the day, but NEVER before making my bed.  I read an article several years ago about how the Navy Seals are trained to make their beds before they start their day.  Although I am not a Navy Seal, I believe it is a form discipline – I can completely relate to that way of thinking. I have a shower, and after, I moisturize. A lot. Keeping my skin hydrated is essential. Depending on what my day calls for, I put on some make-up and get dressed. Some days, it’s all about comfort and athleisure. Other days, I can wear jeans and a sweater. And then there are times when I have to dress up to the nines. No matter what my day looks like, I always take time for my appearance. It makes me feel empowered and confident, like I can conquer the world. And I finish my look off with fragrance – always!

10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

At this point, I’m in my home office writing articles for the site or – for the past two years – my book. I also book conference calls with my colleagues in New York and Toronto around this time.

Face-to-face meetings are always the best, but they’re not always possible. But I much prefer to look someone in the eye, connect and understand their body language. I’ve learned a lot over the years about people through this key tactic and I will stay true to it.

I also use this office time to research and find inspiration. Whether it’s art, fashion, bridal to architecture and interior design, I look at different avenues of creativity for something that touches me personally.

Throughout the day, I snack on raw almonds and Granny Smith Apples with almond butter and cinnamon.  I will have a very light lunch followed by an Americano or Greek coffee to keep me going in the early afternoon. I drink water throughout the day (typically 3 liters). I try to get outside at one point for a break to regroup, and might sneak away to pick up dinner for my husband and I. If I’m working at home, Bronx never leaves my side.

6:00 p.m.

This is a soft deadline for my day to end. It really depends what the days’ demands are. I am happy when I have finished my workday at six. Then I can cook my own food with my own ingredients. I primarily eat fish, chicken, a variety of greens and vegetables. On occasion, I enjoy steak and lamb – I am part Greek and part Egyptian, after all.

I am very content to be at home and to cook. I am disciplined, but I do enjoy a little indulgence now and again. Although I am not a die-hard fan of sweets Grand Marnier Crème Caramel with shaved orange peel and light soufflés are winners!

I enjoy going out, and have been told that I’m the life of the party. I will always make sure that everyone is having a great time, especially if I’m hosting.  A favorite way to spend an evening is by having a small group of friends over, with great conversation, laughter, and always, always good music and wine.

8 to 10:30 p.m.

I change into my “comfy” clothes but I never look sloppy. I never go to bed with makeup on no matter how tired I may be.  I begin with my cleanser followed by an eye serum and then an antioxidant gel to finish off. I wash my face and moisturize every night. I relax with my favorite shows before I go to bed.

10:30 to 11 p.m.

I am not the best sleeper, so I try to go to bed no later than that. I wake up often and only get broken sleep throughout the night, but I am trying to meditate to improve that. Before the lights go off, I tuck Bronx in his dog bed. He needs proper beauty sleep – we both do!
